So, I was shown a game today in class by a classmate. I got to class late and everyone was buzzing about this thing, saying how incredible and intense it is. They wanted me to play it to “see what floor I can get to”, so I found a copy and saved it for later. Bad choice.

Finally, at midnight, still in the school’s computer lab, I decide to play the game with a few of my friends watching. I’m going to tell you right now, this is the scariest game I’ve ever played, ever. Scarier than Amnesia (which is a terrific game, buy it and play it if you get a chance) by far. Developers in the horror/survival horror scene can learn a lot from this. I won’t ruin it for you, but it deals a lot with atmosphere and ambiance.

I’m impressed, I’m not easily scared when it comes to game, or movies, or anything, but this scared the balls off of me. It’s called SCP 087, and it’s a quick game based off the Creepy Pasta of the same name. Like I said before, I recommend you play this, you’ll remember it.

Just a quick note, I did not make this game, nor did I have anything to do with it’s conception or creation. I’m just sharing the link with the world.

Download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?5cadimaeo004aee and let me know what you think!

So judging just ended for Ludum Dare 22, and I placed 34th! There were over 700 submissions this time around, most of which were pretty damn good. Congrats to everyone who placed in the top 50, and good job to everyone who took part. It was fun, and a informative.

To everyone who didn’t participate this time around, I highly recommend taking part next time (this April) for many different reasons. For one, if you’ve never made a game before (or if your portfolio is small) it’s a great way to motivate yourself to make a game in a short amount of time. Also, it’s a great chance to meet people and learn new things. It forces you to go through the entire development process in 48 hours, which is basically forcing experience down your throat. It’s great.

Lastly, the community is awesome. They’re all a great help (for the most part) and nobody is going to hate on your game unless you do something to provoke a bad response. Everyone is supportive, constructively critical, and helpful.

Once again, I’m really glad I took part in Ludum Dare this time around. I learned a lot, and had lots of fun. And to be honest, I’m completely happy placing 34th. I didn’t expect to place at all, but somehow I did, so I’m thankful. Thanks to everyone who played and gave feedback on my game. Looking forward to April’s competition!

It’s 2012! I don’t quite know what everyone else thinks of the start of a new year, but for me it signals the start of a new leaf. Where don’t quite get to start over, but you can pretend to, or break out of routine and into a new, better one. For me, it’s the start of change, which is something I like to welcome with open arms. (Although it sometimes isn’t for the better.)

This year, I plan on making more games. Being in school and working tend to take up a heavy chunk of my time, but I hope to release more games this year in order to better myself, and spread my name around. Making games, for me isn’t just something to do, nor is it something I see myself making great money doing. Instead, making games, for me is what I want to do with my life. Making games is something that has kept me happy since I was young, and it’s something that still keeps me happy today. When I come home from a tough day at school, or a long day at work, working on a game I have in progress is still something I want to do. My personal projects (many of whom will never be completed) mean a lot to me, and they help me express my feelings towards certain things going on in my life, or in the world. This is why I want to make games for a living. Expressing myself in the form of videogames is an incredible feeling, especially when I finish a project and witness people enjoying it.

This new year, I’ll get better at what I do. I’ll work on my weaknesses, and work hard at maintaining my strengths. A few things I specifically want to work on this in the new year are:

Drawing skills

3D Modelling skills (In blender, for the most part)

Texturing skills (z-brush maybe?)

Shader programming

Different game system concepts (like a dialogue system, or an inventory system)

Optimization

I feel that I am either weak, or not as good as I could be at these things, and I intend to get better at them as the year goes on. I’ll be posting my new work here, so keep checking back! Also, follow me on Twitter or subscribe to me on Facebook if you want to keep up.

I created a game called I Need Someone, which is a first-person adventure game.
That said, the 48 hours in which I worked on this game were some of the most intense hours of my life. I enjoyed it, a lot, and I’m planning on doing the next Ludum Dare in April.

So I decided today that I’m going to participate in Ludum Dare 22, which started a few hours ago. Ludum Dare is a game creation competition where you’re given 48 hours to create a game from scratch. This one will be my first, so I’m excited and nervous at the same time.

This theme this time around is “Alone”, touching huh? I think it has a lot of potential, so I’m going to make a game that I sort-of conceptualized a while ago but never started working on. It’s called “I Need Somebody”, and it’s about a person who lives alone in a world without people. Their goal is to find pieces of things they love in order to create a companion that will stop them from feeling alone.

I just ordered pizza, it’s 2am in the morning, I keep pronouncing the competition as “Lundum Dare”, and I only have a day and a half to finish it, so I’m going to get working.

In the meantime, here’s a screenshot of what I’ve got so far. It’s not a lot, but it’s getting there.

I’m Tony, and I like making games. I’m a game developer and programmer from Ontario, currently studying Animation at Loyalist College. This is my site, and the home of my portfolio and games. This is also where I’ll be sharing new developments in my career as a game developer, and many other small thoughts that pop into my head.

I’ve been making games for a long time now. I started when I was a young, and developed my skills throughout primary and secondary school. I started off with a mix of HTML and a number of for-fun game creation tools like the RPG Maker series, and Game Maker, but eventually tried my hand at Flash and ActionScript. Soon after, I began taking different programming courses in high school, learning languages such as C++, Python, and Javascript. Programming came naturally at that point. Without me even realizing it, I became a programmer.

As of now, I work for a virtual world development company based out of my college. I do web design and development on the side as well (let me know if you like my site!), but my love is still making games, and I’m still usually working on games in my spare time.

I’m glad to be doing what I do now. It wasn’t until recently that I realized that making games was what I wanted to do with my life. I’d been doing it for so long as a hobby that I really enjoyed, I hadn’t even considered making it my career.

That said, I don’t have many published games so far, but I’m working on it. If you wanna keep up with me, feel free to subscribe to my RSS feed or follow me on twitter. Send me a message or something, I’m a friendly guy, I don’t bite.

Now, here is a picture of a cat.
