I wanted to show the simple things about life that nobody is really willing to grasp. For example, you can’t go back, you can’t control what happens, it’s short, and you can’t start over. I feel like I managed to pull it off, although I’m not expecting everyone to understand it. I enjoyed working on it though, and it was a good way to entertain myself on a weekend.

I Need Someone is the game I made for Ludum Dare 22, corresponding to the “Alone” theme. It’s a first-person adventure game where you try to build yourself a friend so you don’t have to be alone anymore.

I Need Someone is a small game (I can beat it in about 8 minutes?) but it was fun to make, regardless. My original intention was to include the inside of the house, multiple weapons, and a few NPCs, but of course (given only 48 hours) I didn’t have time for any of those.

In the time I had though, I did however get an enemy finished, a weapon finished, and the main environment finished. I was impressed that I did it all in 48 hours, given that I’ve never done something like this before. It was definitely an experience I enjoyed, and I’m going to be taking part in the next Ludum Dare, for sure.

To be honest, I had this idea (well, something very similar) floating around in my head before Ludum Dare, and when they announced that the theme was “Alone” I couldn’t resist. I impulsively decided to compete, when the night before I told myself that I wouldn’t be. I’m glad I changed my mind though, because I loved every minute of it.

Update: As of now, the judging for Ludum Dare 22 has ended, and I Need Someone placed 34th out of over 700!

And A Stranger Came At Night is a project I worked on as an ISU for my 3rd year in Animation at Loyalist College. Given that I was taking the Game Design version of the course, I was asked to conceptualize, create and finish a game for my ISU. I had a decent looking game working, but I realized half way through the year that my expectations were unrealistic, so I decided to put AASCAN on hold and work on another less complicated game.

I originally got the idea for AASCAN while laying in bed one night. I saw my towel hanging on my door and for a second thought it was a person. After that, it was just one of those “what if” ideas, that grew from there. Before I knew it, I had a large idea of what I wanted the game to be.

AASCAN has not been canceled, it’s only on hold. I intend to work on it again when I have time, and possibly a team working with me.

Tree Planter is an Mobile game for the iPhone and iPad that I worked on as a student and employee of Loyalist College. I worked on this game as part of a group of students doing their internships. InfiniteSpaces – the virtual world design center based out of our college – was nice enough to allow us to do our internship with them, giving us most creative control over te project. While still staying within our boss’s design decisions, we were tasked with planning, designing and developing the game from the ground up. None of us at this point had any experience making a mobile game before, so it was a great learning experience and challenge for everyone involved. In the end, we managed to turn out a product that was playable and enjoyable.

Tree Planter was intended to be InfiniteSpaces first venture into the mobile gaming market. During the development period, I led our group of interns (while being an intern myself) in designing, conceptualizing and formulating the game. I put together a pitch presentation that passed approval with flying colours, getting us the green-light for development. From then on, I ensured that production stayed on task, and made sure that our end goal stayed within reach. In the end, it came down to me and one other intern working on the game until it was complete.

As the first venture into the mobile gaming space, we had to look into different pricing/revenue models that could potentially garner the most success in our type of game. In the end, we took the “Free with Ads” route, and have seen considerable success so far. It was a great learning experience, and fun to work on.

To be clear, I do not own this game, nor did I create the art for it. I was the only programmer on the game, and I also played the role of gameplay designer.

Sloshed is a game I worked on as a student and employee of Loyalist College. I worked on it as part of the Virtual World Design Center based in the school, alongside a team of 4 other employees. I was the main programmer on the project, working under a Lead Programmer who collaborated and organized the basic class structures, giving me ultimately free control to program the game how I wanted granted I followed the class structure laid out before me.

Sloshed was the first published game I had the opportunity to work on. It was created in flash and currently resides online at http://sloshedthegame.ca/. The game was intended to be used as an alcohol awareness game for students of Loyalist College. It was featured in an alcohol awareness campaign hosted by the school, where students could compete for a high score to win a prize.

Just to be clear, I did NOT do the art for this game, nor did I come up with the idea, nor does the game belong to me. I was merely a programmer who worked on it.
